Shattering Inequitable Education Systems
Orenda Reflections

See who your district's systems are serving.

Every student deserves a premium education, no matter their demographic or background. Orenda Reflections brings your district's public data into one clear view, so your team can see how each group of students is being served and where gaps between racial and socioeconomic groups persist. Equity is reached when those gaps close. It shows you how far you have to go, and where your systems can begin to change.

Your next step: Baseline Systems Study

Want to go deeper into your student data?

Public data tells you a gap exists. Your student data tells you why.

The answers live in the everyday systems and practices that shape each student's path:

Who gets placed in which courses?
Who is on track for A–G?
Who has access to rigor?
Who is quietly falling off course?

Orenda's Baseline Systems Study takes your team there.

Working alongside your district and school leaders, we look at:

  • Your student-level data, school by school
  • How effective each school is with the students it serves
  • The systemic inequity traps that may be standing in the way

It's where reflection becomes action, and where systems change begins.

About Orenda Education

To what degree are demographics determining destiny?

For more than 25 years, Orenda has partnered with California's schools and districts to shatter inequitable education systems. Through equity-driven systems work, we help districts accelerate learning, close the student opportunity gap and combat racial and educational injustice, so that every student receives a premium education that is true, right and just.

Orenda Reflections is your first look at two questions we ask with every partner: how effective are our schools with the students we serve, and what systemic inequity traps might be standing in the way?

Let's agree on simple measures of student achievement

Graduation rate

Four-year cohort graduation for All Students and every student group.

A–G rate

The share of graduates who meet UC/CSU requirements, keeping a four-year college in reach.

Achievement gap

A gap of more than 10 percentage points between socioeconomically disadvantaged students and their peers who are not, or between any student group and the highest-performing group. Equity is reached when those gaps close.

Student needs vary. Destiny doesn't have to.

Achievement often tracks how vulnerable students are, but it doesn't have to.

Schools that serve vulnerable students well have defied the odds, proving education can be an equalizing force.

Orenda's Vulnerability Index tiers the state and its counties by these factors to show the range of student needs:

Neighborhood contextStudent populationPoverty% English learnersCommunity safety% MobilityEducational attainment% Students with disabilities

What's possible when systems change

25%increase in cohort graduation rateOver 5 years
18%increase in A–G completion rateOver 5 years
24%decrease in cohort dropout rateOver 5 years
40%increase in ELA and math achievementOver 9 years

Results reported by Orenda partner districts implementing the systems work with fidelity.
